I tried it and I like it! I knew about FiiO due to their E5 headphone amp, which I also liked a lot. It's hard to get good sound out of small speakers like these but the S9 gives a pretty convincing performance and is certainly better than anything else I've heard in this category.
The sound has good clarity - detailed highs, smooth vocals, and definitely on the lean side due to bass limitations. It does manages to sound much bigger than it really is, surprisingly presenting a real believable sound stage. A sound stage is where the speakers "disappear" to the listener and the music is heard as individual instruments and vocals as you would in real life. You would stare right at the speakers and swear that the music you hear is not coming from it, but from somewhere else in front of you. Most portable speakers would be lucky to get away from being practically mono, much less offer something that resembles proper imaging.
Another thing that surprised me is how loud they can play - probably enough to tick off a housemate. The sound can break up a bit at high volume if the music is extremely bass heavy, but dialing the volume back a bit or changing the EQ setting on my MP3 player solves the problem. I put some Sanyo Eneloop AA batteries in mine and they lasted me for a week of off-and-on listening. I don't know if it was 15 hours as claimed, but I was surprised I didn't have to recharge sooner. Anway, good solid product, looks nice too.
